You’ve registered for the game, and you’ve selected a nation. The entire map lies around you, shrouded in the fog of war. Your enemies lurk beyond your borders. They are mobilizing their forces, and soon they’ll invade. You need to prepare.

Around the internet, there are players (and non-players) who are going to tell you that — no matter what country you’re using — you need to build Army Bases in every city and mobilize Motorized Infantry at every one of those Army Bases. Despite what they tell you, though, that’s not always the best course of action.

What those advisors are failing to tell you is that every country is a little different, and every starting strategy should be as well. The best start for your particular country and situation has a lot more to do with the nation you chose and a lot less to do with some universal formula applied the same way to dozens of dissimilar countries.

If you followed my advice for selecting a nation before you fully joined the game, you’ve already considered factors like location, terrain, size, and Military Doctrine. If you chose a nation without considering these things, you may want to consider them now.

As which nation are you playing? Is your region in the mountains or the desert? Are you an isolated island nation, or are you locked in the middle of a large continent? Do you have five Homeland cities or do you have nine? What resource does your country produce more of and what does it produce less of? All of these things can be argued to be determinant of your future units, and those units must be determinant of your building strategy.

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, though. The main thing to remember now is that there is no one best starting build order for every nation. There are, however, some universally beneficial building principles. One of those is that you should let your buildings aid you as soon as they are able. We’ll get to that, though. First, let’s start with what we know.
